Denzel Dumfries has been absent since the last international break due to an ankle injury. The problem seemed mild at first. Instead, he has missed six matches already, and he’ll skip a few more, as he doesn’t really have a firm timetable to return.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the fullback is still in pain whenever he tries to ramp up. The Inter staff is taking it slow to make sure the issue won’t linger once he heals up.
Dumfries has taken advantage of the forced stoppage to handle some off-the-pitch business. He has opted to change his representative for a second time in a relatively short period. He’ll leave Jorge Mendes and is in talks with Ali Barat. He helms Epic Sports and brokered the transfers of Nicolas Jackson to Bayern Munich, Xavi Simons to Tottenham, and Nodi Madueke and Piero Hincapié to Arsenal, among others, in the past window.
The Dutchman has had a couple of restless summers due to a recurring €25M release clause. It’ll be valid next July as well. He’s open to transferring, but only to a top team, or he’ll stay at San Siro. For instance, he turned down West Ham a few months ago.
It wouldn’t be hard to argue that, among their top players, he had the most trouble adjusting to the arrival of Christian Chivu. However, he rarely rested because his replacements hadn’t been up to the task until recently. Only a new contract can remove the threat. Regardless of the results so far, Inter are surely well aware of it, as they invested a decent buck in the same role.
