Champions League qualification is still firmly in their sights, and United are preparing for a window that could define the next phase under their new permanent manager, and wide areas are among the key priorities despite strong contributions from players already in the squad.

Now, developments involving Newcastle United could hand the Red Devils a huge opportunity, with one of their standout attackers reportedly weighing up a summer exit.

According to The Telegraph, Anthony Gordon is understood to be open to leaving Newcastle at the end of the season, with the England international keen to explore his options as he looks to take the next step in his career at the highest level.

Although the winger has not formally handed in a transfer request, there is a growing feeling within St James’ Park that he will push for a move, especially with interest building across the Premier League and Europe.

Anthony Gordon is believed to want clarity on his future before the World Cup, and that urgency could accelerate talks once the transfer window opens.

Newcastle are bracing for early offers, but they remain in a strong negotiating position, with the 25-year-old tied down until 2030 and valued at well over £80 million after a standout campaign that has delivered 17 goals and five assists.

The former Everton man has developed into one of the most dangerous wide players in the league since his £45 million move in January 2023, but there is a growing belief that he now wants to test himself at a club consistently competing in the Champions League.

That is where Manchester United enter the picture.

Gordon has been discussed internally as a potential marquee signing.

United’s interest is not straightforward, though, with Liverpool also circling a player they nearly signed in 2024, while Arsenal are believed to be pushing strongly for his signature.

A return to Merseyside would appeal to Gordon, who grew up supporting Liverpool, but United’s project and guaranteed role in the squad could prove equally tempting.

Gordon wants Champions League football and United could be go ahead of Liverpool in that race if the Merseyside club fail to secure a place in the Champions League next season.

There is also a wider domino effect in play, particularly involving Sandro Tonali, whose representatives have spoken to United already.

If Gordon is sold, Newcastle may not need to part ways with the Italian midfielder, who is also high on United’s shortlist as they prepare for midfield changes with Casemiro set to leave and Manuel Ugarte likely to follow.

That could leave United facing a choice between strengthening their midfield or adding another elite wide option, rather than securing both.

From a squad perspective, Gordon would add serious depth and versatility to a frontline that already includes Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Matheus Cunha, while Patrick Dorgu had also been used on the left before his injury.

Crucially, Gordon’s ability to operate across the front three would give the next manager tactical flexibility, something United have lacked at times this season.

Newcastle’s stance remains firm, with chief executive David Hopkinson making it clear that any departure will only happen on terms that suit the club.

But with the player seemingly ready for a new challenge, and Europe’s top sides circling, this is a situation that could quickly escalate quickly.
