Anthony Martial arrived at Old Trafford in 2015 as the world’s most expensive teenager, a £36million deal from Monaco that came with genuine weight attached given his age.
He didn’t take long to justify the hype either, coming off the bench on his debut against Liverpool and gliding through their defence to score, a moment that instantly made him a fan favourite.
His finest season in a United shirt came in 2019/20, when he netted 23 times across all competitions and was named the club’s Players’ Player of the Year.
That form proved difficult to sustain, and by January 2022 he was shipped out on loan to Sevilla, only for his time in Spain to prove even less fruitful, managing just 12 appearances.
He returned to Old Trafford for one final season before departing permanently in 2024, closing out a nine-year spell that yielded 63 goals in 209 appearances, a record that always felt like it fell short of the talent on show in those early years.
Now 30 and without a club since mutually terminating his contract with Monterrey at the start of the summer, Anthony Martial has rejected a lucrative offer from Al-Ittihad Tripoli as he continues searching for his next move, as reported by Foot Mercato.
His record in Mexico did little to help his cause, managing just one goal in twenty appearances before the Liga MX side agreed to part ways.
According to Foot Mercato, the Libyan club had offered Martial a two-year deal worth €10million net alongside a €5million signing bonus, according to a source in the region.
Martial categorically rejected the proposal, deeming it financially unrealistic despite his current situation as a free agent.
He had already turned down firm offers from two Ligue 1 clubs earlier this year, understood to be due to a lack of sufficient guarantees over regular playing time.
OGC Nice were reported in June to be among a trio of Ligue 1 sides showing interest, with Paris FC and Troyes also said to have made enquiries as he weighed up his options.
Martial is now in advanced talks with Malaga, who sit 18th in LaLiga.
A return to Spain would mark his second spell in the country following that underwhelming Sevilla loan, though regular football rather than reputation appears to be his priority this time around.
His French career also included a Nations League triumph in 2021, part of a spell that brought 30 caps and two goals for Les Bleus before he fell out of the international picture.
Whether Malaga can offer him the platform to rebuild his career at this late stage remains to be seen, but for a player once tipped to lead United’s line for a decade, it represents a considerably more modest next chapter.
