Anthony Martial’s contract terminated by club

Anthony Martial was supposed to be the magnificent future of Manchester United.

In a deal that was a world record for a teenage footballer at the time, the Red Devils completed the signing of the young Frenchman for an initial £36 million in 2015.

But a failure to fulfil his early potential led to a disappointing ending of his tenure at the club. 90 goals and 55 assists – not shocking numbers – over 317 appearances don’t tell the full tale; Martial suffered in a long period of constant change for United.

In September 2024, the French forward finally made the permanent switch away from Old Trafford on a free transfer. Greek club AEK Athens was the destination, where Martial scored nine goals in 25 appearances.

Martial then moved to Mexican club Rayados de Monterrey in September 2025, but has had an underwhelming stint – just one goal in 20 appearances, and he and the club are now parting ways.

According to Fabrizio Romano on X, Anthony Martial and Rayados have mutually agreed to terminate the 30-year-old’s contract. A week before the World Cup, which the French forward will not play a part in, Martial is set to depart as a free agent.

It’s yet another move that has turned out as a disappointment for Martial, who just has not found somewhere post-Manchester United to settle.

Martial’s agent will now have the summer to find him a move to revitalise a stagnating career, which began with so much promise.

The Frenchman, who can play both off the left of attack and through the centre, needs to find a club which he’s willing to work for. The key issue will be finding somewhere willing to meet his wage demands. In his final years at Manchester United, Martial was on a base salary of £250,000 a week.

Anthony Martial will now have to settle for less, and find somewhere to see out the final years of his career with a bit of excitement back in his game.
