Just one year after leading Liverpool to a Premier League title, Arne Slot is out at Anfield.
Liverpool announced Saturday that Slot has left the club with immediate effect following a disastrous 2025-26 campaign that saw the Reds fall from champions to fifth place despite massive spending in the transfer market. The decision comes as one of the most stunning managerial reversals in recent Premier League history.
When Slot arrived in 2024 to replace the legendary Jürgen Klopp, many wondered if anyone could fill those shoes. Instead, he delivered immediately. Liverpool won the Premier League in his first season, and Slot became the first Dutch manager ever to win England’s top flight.
Liverpool FC can confirm Arne Slot is to depart his role as head coach with immediate effect and that the process to appoint a successor is under way.

He leaves with a Premier League title to his name and our deepest gratitude and appreciation.
But the fairytale did not last.
Liverpool entered the 2025-26 season with expectations of building a dynasty. Instead, the club struggled throughout the year. Despite reportedly spending more than £400 million on new players, performances declined dramatically. The Reds finished fifth, ended the season 25 points behind champions Arsenal, and failed to seriously compete for silverware.
The season was also overshadowed by tragedy following the death of forward Diogo Jota. Liverpool’s ownership praised Slot for how he handled the club during that difficult period, but ultimately felt a change was needed to move the team forward.
Reports throughout the spring suggested Liverpool would stand by Slot despite fan frustration. In fact, Slot himself said earlier this month that he had “every reason to believe” he would remain manager next season. That makes Saturday’s announcement even more surprising.
Now attention turns to who comes next.
Multiple reports indicate former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola is the leading candidate to take over. Iraola impressed many across the Premier League with his aggressive pressing style and could represent a significant tactical shift from Slot’s approach.
For Liverpool supporters, the move signals the start of another major transition. Just two years ago, the club was saying goodbye to Klopp. Now they are searching for yet another manager after one of the most dramatic rises and falls the Premier League has seen in years.
Slot will leave Anfield remembered for delivering a league title. But he will also be remembered for how quickly everything unraveled afterward.
