Arne Slot’s Liverpool future has been under scrutiny for quite some time now. In spite of being the Premier League champions last season and having a few good signings subsequently, Liverpool have flattered to deceive this season.
Being in fifth place in the Premier League table with 49 points in 31 matches is bad enough, not to mention an unceremonious exit from the FA Cup and a meek surrender to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League.
Arne Slot’s Liverpool future is not safe by any means. In fact, had the cushion of winning the Premier League title last season not been there for him, he would probably have been gone by now.
Since losing to PSG in the Champions League last season, Liverpool have lost in 21 of their 59 matches, which is a pathetic record for a top team.
In order to save Arne Slot’s Liverpool future, the Dutchman has started making his team play with two forwards. Liverpool started the match against PSG with a 3-5-2 formation. However, playing Florian Wirtz as one of two forwards is hardly the solution.
It is obvious that Wirtz is at his best when the game allows him enough time to create. His creativity is at its peak when he has space in the opposition half and is not being forced to rush things. Therefore, forcing him to stay in the final third and make quick decisions with the ball on his feet are not ideal conditions for him to thrive.
With Andy Robertson now being restricted to a fringe player, Trent Alexander-Arnold having left, and Mohamed Salah being nowhere near his best, Liverpool simply cannot play a high-paced game. Dominik Szoboszlai can play a high-tempo game, and he has demonstrated his ability in this regard extensively this season. However, he cannot do it all by himself.
Hence, the way out for Liverpool is to develop a possession-oriented style with plenty of passes. The likes of Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike are quite adept at playing passes. Curtis Jones could also be a very important player in that regard.
Now, it is the manager’s job to change the philosophy and playing style of his team. By winning the Premier League last season, Slot should ideally have a lot of clout and command over his players. However, for some reason or another, the performance on the pitch has simply been deplorable.
Arne Slot’s Liverpool future will be on the line as Liverpool take on Fulham on Saturday, April 11. Anything below three points will not be acceptable for the Reds in that match.
Should Arsenal make it to the last four of the Champions League this season, it will facilitate the presence of a fifth English team in the competition next season. Hence, Liverpool will probably qualify for the competition even if they finish fifth in the league table.
The Champions League is all but gone, as PSG are unlikely to allow any ground to the Reds next week, even considering the sizeable influence of the Anfield crowd. The Arne Slot’s Liverpool future, therefore, will continue to be under a lot of pressure for some time now.
