Arsenal are into the Champions League semifinals—but if this performance is anything to go by, they won’t be there for long.
A lifeless 0-0 draw against Sporting CP at the Emirates was enough to send Arsenal through 1-0 on aggregate, but the way they got there left more frustration than confidence.

This wasn’t a statement performance. It wasn’t even convincing.
It was flat, uninspiring, and at times, shockingly passive for a team with title ambitions.
Despite having slightly more possession (50.4% to 49.6%) and nearly double the shot attempts (15 to 8), Arsenal managed just one shot on target all match. One. At home. In a Champions League quarterfinal.
That’s not just poor—it’s concerning.
Sporting CP, meanwhile, looked more dangerous in key moments despite having less of the ball. They pressed, disrupted, and made Arsenal uncomfortable for long stretches, exposing a lack of creativity and urgency from Mikel Arteta’s side.
And that’s where the real issue lies.
Arsenal didn’t play like a team trying to win—they played like a team trying not to lose.
There was no killer instinct, no tempo, and no real attacking identity when it mattered most. For a club trying to reestablish itself among Europe’s elite, this kind of performance raises serious doubts.
Yes, they advanced. Yes, that’s what matters on paper.
But performances like this don’t win Champions Leagues.
If anything, they invite trouble.
Because against stronger opposition—teams like Bayern Munich or Manchester City—this level simply won’t be enough. Not even close.
Arsenal are through.
But if they don’t find another gear quickly, their Champions League run could end just as quietly as this match did.
