Recent reports claim that both Arsenal and Manchester United have been in contact with Atalanta to discuss the availability of centre-forward and Italy international Mateo Retegui.

The Dea striker has been in excellent form in front of goal following his move to Bergamo in the summer, and is now up to 20 in Serie A, 23 in all competitions, following his four-goal haul in the 5-0 win over Hellas Verona over the weekend.

Though he has not yet completed a full season with Atalanta, there are already suggestions that Retegui is of interest to a number of ‘top’ clubs across Europe ahead of the summer transfer window.

Manchester United and Arsenal in contact for Atalanta’s Retegui

Among the interested parties are Manchester United and Arsenal, who have both made contact with Atalanta in recent weeks according to reports from Footmercato . The French outlet claims that Aston Villa and Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in the 25-year-old, but have not made direct contact with La Dea.

Arsenal are in the market for a new centre-forward, particularly after the season-ending injury to Kai Havertz and the current unavailability of Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.

The last two strikers to have joined Manchester United have both come from Serie A: Most recently Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna for an initial fee of €53m, and Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta for around €75m the summer prior.

Retegui is currently tied to a contract that runs until the summer of 2028 in Bergamo, but Football London claims that he has a release clause worth €50m included in his current deal.

Atalanta paid a fee of €28m including bonuses to bring Retegui to the Gewiss Stadium from Genoa in the summer of 2024.
