Arsenal are facing a pivotal decision over the future of Thomas Partey, whose dramatic resurgence this season has sparked internal debate and external interest. With talks now underway over a potential contract extension for the 31-year-old, Partey, whose deal expires this summer, has arguably produced his finest campaign since arriving from Atlético Madrid in 2020.
Once maligned for persistent injuries, having missed 81 matches during his first four seasons in North London, Partey has been featured in 47 matches in 2024-25 across all competitions and clocked over 2,400 Premier League minutes – the fourth-most in Mikel Arteta’s squad.
His contributions have gone far beyond availability. Operating primarily as a deep-lying No. 6, Partey has also demonstrated adaptability, starting nine matches at right-back amid defensive shortages.
Statistically, Partey ranks near the top at Arsenal in key midfield metrics.
Despite his stellar form, contract negotiations remain complex.
Arsenal have opened exploratory talks with Partey’s camp. However, insiders suggest those discussions are in their infancy. The midfielder is reportedly seeking an improved contract, despite being one of Arsenal’s top earners.
Offering more could be seen as financially risky, even if he continues his impressive form. But, incentive-laden clauses based on appearances and performance could be a potential compromise.
The timing of Arsenal’s renewal efforts may prove critical. Clubs including Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and several from the Saudi Pro League are monitoring the situation. Partey’s previous success in La Liga and improved fitness this season have made him an attractive prospect on a free transfer.
Sources say Partey is open to remaining in London but would consider a move back to Spain under the right circumstances.
Former Arsenal and Real Madrid forward Julio Baptista has thrown his support behind extending Partey’s deal.
️Former #Arsenal man Júlio Baptista says #Arsenal must extend Thomas Partey’s contract: “I think for Arsenal, Thomas Partey has been an incredible player. In Partey, Arteta has found a player that understands what he wants. If I’m Arteta, I’d renew his contract but also bring in… pic.twitter.com/sCJgkQyTII

“For me, age is not a big problem,” said Baptista. “Look at Mo Salah. Players are fitter these days. Partey has shown he’s still elite. I’d renew his contract but also bring in someone younger to challenge him.”
With Jorginho expected to leave and Martin Zubimendi linked with a summer move from Real Sociedad, Arsenal’s midfield could look very different next season. Losing both veterans could leave Arteta short on experience as the club continues its Champions League ambitions.
Partey missed Tuesday’s UCL semifinal first leg vs. PSG due to suspension, and his absence was felt in a narrow 1-0 loss. A strong showing in the second leg (should Arsenal advance) may further underscore his value ahead of a final decision.
