As if Arsenal needed reminding that they signed a top-class striker in Viktor Gyokeres last summer, Jobe Bellingham has just offered another nudge.
Speaking to the Bundesliga’s official TikTok account, the younger brother of Jude Bellingham was asked to name his dream five-a-side team made up of players he has played against.
The Borussia Dortmund midfielder named an eye-catching line-up featuring Sergio Ramos, Thiago Silva and Gustavo Hamer, with Arsenal’s new man, Viktor Gyokeres, leading the attack.
“For striker: Gyokeres,” Jobe explained. “I played against him in the Championship. He was really good. He was at Coventry. I was at Birmingham.”
Such praise should give Gooners confidence that their new No.9 will come good, even if his start at Arsenal has not grabbed the headlines.
On paper, two goals in three games is a decent return. But with both goals coming against newly promoted Leeds, and underwhelming displays against Manchester United and Liverpool, some pundits are already suggesting Gyokeres will go missing in the games that matter.
While a few are quick to label him a potential disappointment, Gyokeres must respond on the pitch.
He needs to find his rhythm because once he does, he will silence the critics. After all, this is a striker who scored 97 goals across the last two seasons before signing for Arsenal.
Arteta must also play his part. The team needs to be set up to suit Gyokeres’ strengths. They must create chances for him because when they do, he is the kind of forward who will bury them.
So far, Gyokeres’ new teammates have failed to provide him with the service he thrives on. That cannot continue.
If the Gunners want their new striker to flourish, they must start playing to his strengths. Because if they do, the goals will follow, and so will the confidence.
Thoughts Gooners?
