Arsenal Must Sign Another Attacker in January – Opinion

Even before it was revealed that Bukayo Saka would be injured for a couple of months, Andrea Berta was under pressure to improve our attack this January.

Yet we said the same in the summer, and the Italian somehow made us weaker in that department. By selling Trossard, Jesus and Martinelli, loaning out Nwaneri and replacing them only with Tzolis, the champions have fewer attacking options than this time last year.

Quite incredible when, for months, most in the sport knew that was the area our squad needed improving.

If the target was to help Arsenal get over the line in the Champions League, making the weakest part of our team weaker is either arrogant, naive or both.

It’s not like we were under financial pressure to raise funds, so it was a gamble our recruitment team didn’t need to make.

Questions for Andrea Berta

Our Director of Football surely watches football? Therefore, he would know that it’s been a few seasons since Saka didn’t have a spell on the sidelines?

You assume the 54-year-old communicates with Mikel Arteta?

Therefore, he would know that the Spaniard clearly doesn’t trust Viktor Gyökeres and is losing faith in Eze.

Remember, Mr Berta isn’t doing us any favours. It’s literally his job!

He gets paid thousands of pounds a week to put together a shortlist to improve the team.

There are two months a year to negotiate with other clubs, but that doesn’t stop him scouting and identifying talent in between so that list is ready for January.

Yet two years ago, our manager made it clear that he was short of numbers up front and asked for help, help that never arrived.

While no one at the Emirates would admit it, it was the definition of waving the white flag in the title race.

It was insulting to our fanbase to pretend that we could challenge for honours with a midfielder (Merino) as a makeshift striker, Sterling on loan and a full-back as an attacking sub.

It would be equally insulting to pretend that we currently have enough firepower to be champions of Europe.

Arsenal Cannot Afford to Stand Still

Kai Havertz, who has never been and never will be a natural goalscorer, Madueke, whose final ball is terrible, and a player still needing to settle into a new culture.

There is hope that Dowman will be given more opportunities, but the best team in England shouldn’t be relying on a 16-year-old for creativity.

You wouldn’t put it past the Gunners to be top of the league in the New Year and think they can get away with what they have, especially if it’s confirmed Man City have been deducted points.

There are Gooners who think the definition of a supporter is to only say positive things about the team they love.

They will follow the company line that the policy is to only sign individuals who make us better and that they don’t exist in the winter.

To be a big club, you think like a big club. Many title winners don’t respond by reducing their offensive options.

A new attacker should be ready for the first day of 2027. If not, we should ask why.

Do you agree with Dan that Arsenal must sign another attacker in January, or are you confident that we already have enough quality to compete for the biggest trophies?
