Arsenal have enjoyed a good start to the 2025/26 season, currently sitting second in the Premier League, two points behind league leaders Liverpool. They also made a good start to their Champions League campaign, winning 2-0 away at Athletic Club. Mikel Arteta has already had some significant injury setbacks. Key defender William Saliba has also been injured this season, but is now back alongside Gabriel in defence. The Gunners have revealed today that Saliba has signed a new long-term contract with the North London club.
Saliba, described as exceptional by his manager has made over 140 appearances in all competitions, since joining the Gunners in July 2019.
Since becoming a regular at the Emirates, Saliba has become the main cog in the Arsenal defence, contributing to a defence that is extremely difficult to break down.
His consistent and impressive performances have seen the Frenchman called up to represent his country at the 2022 World Cup and UEFA Euro 2024. He continues to be a vital player for Arsenal and their defence this season, alongside Gabriel, Jurrien Timber, and Riccardo Calafiori.
The Gunners sporting director Andrea Berta spoke on Saliba’s new deal:
“We’re so happy that William has committed his future to us to be part of what we’re building here. In the last three seasons, William has become an incredible defender whose composure, intelligence and physical presence make him one of the best in the world. He will continue his development with Arsenal to reach new heights.
“His consistency, maturity, and ability to influence matches will continue to be a big asset for us and we’re looking forward to many more great performances from him at the heart of our defence.”
Arsenal boss Arteta also expressed his delight at the deal, praising the French defender:
“William is loved by all the players and staff, and that speaks volumes about his character, commitment and attitude every day. Since joining us, William has grown so much, embraced responsibility, and has created a strong connection with our supporters and everyone at the club.
“We know there is still so much to come from him and will continue to work together to keep improving with the clear ambition of winning major trophies.”
Arsenal note on their website that “William’s new contract is subject to the completion of regulatory processes.”
The Gunners will be eager to pick up a major trophy or two this season, and having a defender of Saliba’s class is vital to that.
