Aston Villa are eyeing Manchester United star Mason Mount

At Manchester United, the decision-making never stops, especially as the transfer market gathers momentum. The club is emerging from a turbulent season filled with inconsistency, injuries, and an urgent need for a comprehensive rebuild across multiple areas.

With Rúben Amorim stepping in as the new manager, a significant tactical overhaul is on the horizon. Within this reshaping, several players are being assessed for potential exits, and Mason Mount is increasingly under the spotlight. While injuries have had a negative impact, the Englishman has not really impressed when fit either.

Signed amid high expectations, Mount has struggled to make a meaningful impact at Old Trafford. His future now appears uncertain, with growing interest from other clubs and rising doubts about whether he fits into the new project.

Football Insider has reported that Aston Villa are showing strong interest in signing Mason Mount and have stepped up their efforts to bring the 26-year-old midfielder to Villa Park. Mount’s future at Manchester United is uncertain, as he has struggled to secure a regular spot in the starting lineup. His form has been inconsistent, compounded by injury setbacks and absences during key moments of the season.

While Mount has had some positive performances in the Europa League, his overall inconsistency remains a significant concern. No official decision has been made regarding his departure, but the club is exploring potential options. Former manager Mick Brown confirmed that Manchester United has gauged interest in Mount from the market, with Aston Villa emerging as a strong contender, hoping to revive the player’s form from his Chelsea days. Meanwhile, an earlier report confirmed that Ruben Amorim is keen on retaining Mount at Old Trafford.

“Aston Villa have been spoken about and I think they could make a move.

“People remember Mason Mount at his best, that what Villa want to help him get back to and it looks like he’s back to full fitness now.

“Villa want to strengthen because they’ve lost Rashford and Asensio, so Mount is on their list.

“Unai Emery is a fan of his and feels he could help him to rediscover his Chelsea form.“

Selling the Englishman now could free up wage space and facilitate additions that align with Amorim’s vision. But there is also the risk of letting go of a player who, if he returns to his best form, can make a difference.

Unai Emery, to his credit, got the best out of Marcus Rashford, a player who appeared lost at Old Trafford. Him enjoying a similar impact with Mount is certainly not a good look for the Red Devils. With Amorim also keen to retain the player, it remains to be seen how this saga plays out this summer.

Mount’s talent has not disappeared; the issue has been his consistency and the lack of a tactical setup that suits his strengths. At Aston Villa, Unai Emery reportedly believes he can reignite the midfielder’s best form. Should he succeed, Manchester United may come to regret letting Mount go, it wouldn’t be the first time a top club has prematurely moved on from a player who later thrived elsewhere.

At the same time, Rúben Amorim is focused on building a cohesive, high-intensity midfield with a well-defined identity. If Mount doesn’t align with that vision, his departure would be understandable. However, allowing him to join a direct competitor for European qualification is a risky move. The question for United is whether they are prepared to take that risk or whether they still see Mount as an asset worth nurturing. Ultimately, the decision now rests with Amorim and the board, whether to invest in the present, plan for the future, or try to strike a balance between both. Meanwhile, Manchester United are reportedly set to offer a one-year contract extension to a veteran member of the squad.
