Three Americans to watch as Premier League preps for start of season

American soccer players have succeeded in the Premier League for decades, but never quite as well as they are now. Three of the league's teams — Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Fulham— have U. S. Men's National Team stars.

With the new season set to begin Friday, here's a snapshot of each team and its American player:

Crystal Palace | Last season: 12th

Key transfers out: N/A

Key transfers in: Left back Borna Sosa (from Ajax)

American defender Chris Richards was a big part of Palace's FA Cup-trophy-winning season in 2024-25, and he's translated that fine form into his games for the USMNT. Richards had a brilliant summer with the national team, scoring two crucial goals during its Gold Cup run and morphing into one of the team's de facto leaders. He's primed for a breakthrough year in the Premier League, just in time for the next year's World Cup.

The miracle of Crystal Palace's offseason wasn't its signings. It was its lack of exits. The London-based club kept every member of its FA Cup-winning team despite strong interest from other clubs. Forward Jean Philippe Mateta, midfielder Eberechi Eze and defender Marc Guehi remain — at least for now. Palace has done well to keep them around.

Bournemouth | Last season: ninth

Key transfers out: Center back Dean Huijsen (to Real Madrid), left back Milos Kerkez (to Liverpool), center back Ilya Zabarnyi (to Paris Saint- Germain)

Key transfers in: Goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic (from Chelsea), left back Adrien Truffert (from Rennes), center back Bafode Diakite (from Lille)

Many players stood out during Bournemouth's impressive 2024-25 campaign, but one played far less than he would've liked: American midfielder and World Cup captain Tyler Adams. He missed the opening stretch of the season with a persistent back injury and took his time finding his way back to fitness. Now, though, after a strong Gold Cup showing with the USMNT, Adams is ready for regular action.

“This past season gave me the confidence that I needed to now say: ‘You could take the next step. Let’s take another step in development. Take a step in pushing yourself’,' ” he told The Athletic. "I’ve had a nice break. I’m going to be able to get a nice preseason. And (then) it’s go time.”

Bournemouth was the surprise of the 2024-25 Premier League season. For proof, see the list above of key transfers and where they landed. Bournemouth is on an incredible hot streak, and coach Andoni Iraola is making a name for himself as one of Europe's best at cultivating talent.

Fulham | Last season: 11th

Key transfers out: Winger Willian (unsigned), forward Carlos Vinicius (to Gremio)

Key transfers in: None

Fulham has a long history with the USMNT. It signed midfielder Brian McBride in 2004 and named its stadium bar after him after his retirement. Fulham featured Clint Dempsey as a regular starter from 2007-2012. It even featured an all-American defensive pairing of Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson as recently as last season.

Ream has since left — you can catch him captaining Charlotte FC in Major League Soccer — but Robinson remains. The American defender, one of the world's best left backs, is dealing with a knee injury. He missed the Gold Cup with the USMNT this summer, and he looks set to miss the start of Fulham's season, too.

"The worst thing we can have now is more injuries," said Fulham coach Marco Silva, per the London Evening Standard. And it's understandable why: The club hasn't made any big signings to bolster its roster. The faster Robinson can return to full fitness, the better for Fulham.
