Aston Villa earned one of their best results of the season yesterday. A week after a disappointing loss to Liverpool at Anfield, Villa got back to winning ways with a 4-0 win against AFC Bournemouth.
Goals from Emiliano Buendia, Amadou Onana, Ross Barkley and Donyel Malen all found themselves on the scoresheet, in the same game that saw Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo have his penalty saved by Emiliano Martinez.
As such, Villa’s result saw them move up to sixth and level on points with Liverpool. The great mood in the Villa camp has continued today, with exciting youngster Morgan Rogers putting pen to paper in a new deal that sees him contracted to the club until at least 2031.
This will delight the Villa fanbase to see one of their best players of last season commit their future to the club, as will the news of why one of their top players chose to join them over Manchester United.
Walfoot has reported that the agent of Villa midfielder Amadou Onana spoke of the reason that the move to United was rejected. She said: “It was a project where Amadou could continue to develop [Aston Villa]. We spoke with the sporting director, and the salary was also attractive, let’s not kid ourselves.”
She continued: “The Euros were coming up, Amadou was performing well, and we finalised the deal. Then, Manchester United entered the picture. But I had already given my word to Aston Villa.
“We knew very well that Manchester would be able to offer better financial terms, but we had already given our word to Aston Villa, and the project was a good fit. The style of football played, the club’s ambition: Amadou felt right at home there.”
United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and can attract most players despite struggles on the pitch, with the summer additions of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbuemo despite the 15th place finish in the Premier League table clear evidence of this.
However, if Onana had decided to join United instead of Villa, then the football gods may have had a different idea for both clubs.
