Atalanta officially sign Ederson replacement
USA TODAY Sports

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is beginning to gather real momentum as Michael Carrick looks to reshape one of the most important areas of his squad.

With multiple arrivals expected, United’s business is also starting to have a knock-on effect elsewhere across Europe.

One club has already lined up the player they believe can replace a midfielder who looks destined for Old Trafford.

Atalanta confirm signing of Ederson replacement

Atalanta have confirmed, via their website, the signing of Gianluca Gaetano from Cagliari on a permanent deal as preparations continue for Ederson’s expected departure to Manchester United.

The Serie A side announced the arrival of the 26-year-old midfielder after he built up an impressive résumé in Italian football.

Gianluca Gaetano has made 93 Serie A appearances, contributing 10 goals and 11 assists, while also featuring five times in the UEFA Champions League.

The midfielder also lifted the Serie A title with Napoli and helped Cremonese earn promotion from Serie B to the top flight during his career.

His arrival is widely viewed as Atalanta’s replacement for Ederson, whose move to Manchester United is now edging closer.

The Brazilian underwent a medical with the Red Devils, and if everything goes according to plan, he is expected to complete his transfer to Old Trafford shortly afterwards.

Ederson also featured for Brazil at the FIFA World Cup after receiving a late call-up to the squad, further enhancing his reputation before his expected move to England.

Manchester United are also closing in on announcing the signing of Andrey Santos from Chelsea, meaning Ederson could become the club’s second midfield addition in quick succession.

Should both deals be completed, Carrick’s midfield options will receive a significant boost ahead of the new Premier League season.
