Atalanta rejected an offer of €50 million for Italian centre-back Giorgio Scalvini from Premier League side Newcastle United in the summer, with La Dea desperate to keep hold of the talented 21-year-old.

According to what has been reported by Matteo Moretto, via AtalantaOggi, Atalanta refused multiple attempts from the Premier League outfit to sign Scalvini in the closing days of the transfer window.

Atalanta consider the defender to be an important cornerstone of the club’s future and new head coach Ivan Juric sees him as a key part of his technical project in Bergamo.

Highly-rated Scalvini stays at Atalanta despite Newcastle onslaught

Moretto revealed that whilst full negotiations were never started between the two clubs, Newcastle made multiple enquiries for the player.

All of the club’s attempts were met with a firm ‘no’ by Atalanta, who set a minimum valuation of the centre-back at €50 million – a figure which discouraged further movement from the Geordie side.

Newcastle were not the only club interested in signing Scalvini, however, with the reports adding that Napoli were interested in the Italian before instead opting to sign Sam Beukema from Bologna.

Newcastle, meanwhile, turned their attention to Malick Thiaw and signed the Rossoneri centre-back in a deal worth a reported €40 million.
