It took Atalanta three days to find a replacement for Gianluca Scamacca, who just tore his ACL, as they quickly reached an agreement with Genoa for Mateo Retegui. They’ll play €22M plus €3M add-ons, Mattia Moretto reports (via SOSFanta).
The striker will sign a four-year contract. The Rossoblù will record a decent ‘plusvalenza’ since they paid nearly €15M to acquire him from Tigre last year. He scored 7 goals and provided 2 assists in 29 matches in his first Serie A season. He was hampered by an ankle injury early on.
Atalanta will bring in Retegui for the medicals and the other formalities on Thursday. The Boca Juniors product also starred for Estudiantes and Talleres earlier in this career. He has 12 caps and 4 goals with Italy.
Per Alfredo Pedullà, Genoa considered M’Bala Nzola as a substitute, but he’s very close to joining Lens on loan. The Albert Gudmundsson deal with Fiorentina has been put on hold due to the departure of his teammate.
It’s not a great spot to be in since Scamacca is eventually going to come back, so they needed somebody decent but without breaking the bank since they’ll have to coexist in the future. He wasn’t too impressive last season, but he has the right attitude and intensity, takes care of the dirty work and wasn’t playing in a very offensive side. They surely aren’t low on goal scorers even if the center-forward isn’t producing in spades.
If Vitinha and Junior Messias stay healthy, Genoa had the option of selling one striker without too much damage, and the Italian Argentine is easier to replace than Gudmundsson. Instead, a double departure would be an issue.
More must-reads:
Manchester United have already conducted a fair bit of summer business, signing Matheus Cunha for £62.5 million and Bryan Mbeumo for a steep £70 million. They seem keen to reinforce their frontline, with previous interest in strikers like Viktor Gyokeres and Hugo Ekitike. However, they must now consider their options for a new goalkeeper with Andre Onana injured in pre-season. Manchester United have had an approach rejected for Emi Martinez. Manchester United Make Moves in the Market After Injury Blow Loan Deal Rejected Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Manchester United have approached Aston Villa for their goalkeeper, Martinez. The Red Devils had proposed a loan deal, perhaps with finances running low after plenty of high spending already. However, this has been unsurprisingly “rejected” by the Villans: the Argentinian is their star player and losing him without any immediate cash would seem non-beneficial. On his YouTube channel, the journalist revealed that Villa are saying “no chance” to losing “one of the best in the world, if not the best”. The club are still deciding internally how to go about their goalkeeper conundrum, with their two options being to sign an experienced goalkeeper to help the squad, or a young one who has potential to one day wear the number one shirt. Senne Lammens is reportedly one of the main names discussed, with 60 games for Royal Antwerp at just 23-years-old. Which Profile of Goalkeeper Should Manchester United Go For? United are looking at goalkeepers because Onana suffered a hamstring injury in pre-season, and looks set to miss the first few matches of the new campaign. The Red Devils cannot afford another horror start. Therefore, they need to find a replacement, though only temporarily, as Onana will eventually return. This explains their two options: an experienced player who doesn’t mind no longer being a starter, or a youngster who hopes to one day break in. With the current state of the club and squad, an experienced head seems to be the smarter choice – someone who can contribute to the dressing room and off-the-pitch matters, whilst competently filling in on the pitch when needed. Meanwhile, a younger goalkeeper will likely cost more and may feel pressure when thrown into the deep end. Furthermore, if United are shooting for the top, there is no guarantee that someone like Lammens will eventually be at that level. It seems that they want to sign a star at some point, a Martinez, but perhaps that is not possible now. With Onana set to return early in the season, a seasoned player will work better as a stopgap.
The New York Yankees didn't come into the season with the strongest third base situation, and it only got worse over time. They converted traditional second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. to the hot corner after getting him at the Trade Deadline last season and installed a timeshare with him, DJ LeMahieu, Oswald Peraza, and Oswaldo Cabrera there in 2025. However, the latter player broke his ankle on May 12, and the Yankees released the now 37-year-old LeMahieu on July 10. Chisholm was primarily back at second at that point, so this left Peraza and Jorbit Vivas as their only true remaining third basemen. With Peraza hitting .147 and Vivas hitting .164, it was clear what the team's biggest need was. That's why it acquired veteran third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies on Friday. New York manager Aaron Boone gave his thoughts about the 30-year-old before Friday's bout with the Philadelphia Phillies, via SNY. "I know there's real offensive potential there. I know he's had real offensive success, as well as some struggles there over the last calendar year or two," he said. "It seems like over the last month he's really started swinging the bat like he's capable of. He can impact the ball, he can control the strike zone, he's had some swing-and-misses that have probably hurt him a little bit." "But then he can really defend over there," he continued. "The handful of times that we've played against them that I watch him, you're like, 'That's what it should look like over there.' He moves really well and has that prototypical good third base thing." McMahon is slashing .217/.314/.403 with 16 homers and 35 RBI over 100 games this season. He also has a .978 fielding percentage and six errors. Right-handed pitcher Will Warren (6-5, 4.91 ERA) will start for the Yankees against Phillies right-hander Taijuan Walker (3-5, 3.75 ERA) on Friday.
Following the shocking news of Hulk Hogan’s passing, wrestling legend Dustin Rhodes, known to millions as Goldust in WWE, took to social media to share a deeply personal and provocative reaction: “Hospitals truly kill people. I really do mean that.” Rhodes’ blunt statement stunned many fans, but those who know his story saw the pain behind the words. His father, the iconic Dusty Rhodes, passed away in 2015, aged 69, after a fall at home led to hospitalization for kidney failure. After his father's passing, Dustin shared a contemplative response on WWE's YouTube channel to discuss the legacy his father left behind. The news of Hogan's death comes just a month after reports suggested he was on his "deathbed" after undergoing a neck procedure back in May. Hogan's reps denied that was the case. In June, US Weekly reported that Hogan had also undergone a "pretty serious heart surgery and was doing well afterward." Dustin’s connection to his brother Cody Rhodes, now a top WWE superstar and face of the company’s next generation, is unbreakable. The Rhodes family legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of pro wrestling history, and seeing another legend like Hogan pass has clearly hit close to home. While Goldust and Hulk Hogan never had a headline-grabbing rivalry, they did share the ring once. It occurred in WCW in 2000 when Dustin Rhodes matched up against Hogan. Although their paths didn’t often cross in the squared circle, Hogan and the Rhodes family were part of the same larger-than-life era that helped define pro wrestling for decades and catapult the sport into society's zeitgeist. Rhodes’ comment about hospitals might not sit well with everyone, but it speaks to a raw and honest pain felt by someone who has seen too many legends, both personal and professional, fade away in similar fashion. The sport of wrestling has endured more than its fair share of lives cut short. As tributes continue to pour in for Hogan, Rhodes’ reaction serves as a powerful, if somber, reminder of the real human emotions behind the wrestling personas.
The Las Vegas Raiders have had a busy first week of training camp. Not only are they getting ready for the new season to start, but they have been busy making moves all week long. From the beginning of the week to now, the Raiders have been working to get the best possible roster together for the 2025 season. On Friday, the Silver and Black claimed defensive tackle Keondre Coburn from the Tennessee Titans off of waivers. "Raiders claimed DT Keondre Coburn via waivers from the Titans," said ESPN Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter on X/Twitter. The move for Coburn comes one day after the Raiders shocked the NFL world by releasing defensive tackle Christian Wilkins. The Raiders felt that the move was necessary to put all their focus on the upcoming season. "The reason for the Raiders' releasing him right as training camp has begun has to do with the foot injury he sustained that kept him out for the majority of last season," our Fernando Alfaro-Donis said. "The Raiders' front office must've believed that the recovery process wasn't going along smoothly, so much so, they decided to cut their losses while they were ahead." Per Raiders: "The Las Vegas Raiders have claimed DT Keondre Coburn via waivers from the Tennessee Titans, the team announced Tuesday. Coburn joins the Silver and Black for his third NFL season after spending the second half of 2023 and the entire 2024 season with the Titans. Coburn initially entered the NFL as a sixth-round pick (194th overall) by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2023 NFL Draft. The 6-2, 322-pound defensive tackle has played in 20 career games (one start), one with the Chiefs (2023) and 19 with the Titans (2023-24) and has recorded 22 tackles (10 solo) and one tackle for loss. The Houston native attended the University of Texas, where he played five seasons (2018-22), appearing in 51 career games (45 starts) and totaling 96 tackles, 14 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks over his career. In his senior campaign with the Longhorns in 2022, Coburn earned a Second Team All-Big 12 selection and honorable mention Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year honors. Now the Silver and Black bring more competition into the defensive line room, and that is what head coach Pete Carroll is looking for.
