The Tottenham star in question is keen to create his own legacy after recently extending his contract at N17.

Many expected Tottenham defender Cristian Romero to leave the club for pastures new in the summer as he faced an uncertain future at N17. The Argentine played a crucial role in helping the Lilywhites win the Europa League against all odds last season, featuring regularly in the knockout rounds and winning the Man of the Match award in the final.

The 27-year-old was widely tipped to join Atletico Madrid after the historic triumph, with Romero himself admitting that he dreamed of playing in La Liga. The Spanish giants attempted to lure him to the Wanda Metropolitano throughout the window, with Diego Simeone reportedly calling the prolific centre-back every day in an effort to convince him.

However, the move failed to materialise in the end, thanks to Thomas Frank’s ability to convince the defender that his future lay at N17. Romero eventually signed a contract extension with the Lilywhites, committing himself to the club until 2029. Frank also handed him the armband for the current season, entrusting him to lead the team and help the North Londoners build on last season’s Europa League success.

Tottenham star Cristian Romero to don Atleti colours in the future?

Tottenham fans were delighted to see Cristian Romero reject Atletico Madrid and extend his stay at N17 during the summer. The Argentina international has quickly become one of the standout performers for the Lilywhites under Thomas Frank this season, helping the club narrow the gap on their Premier League rivals. He is embracing the responsibility, leading from the front, and holding the dressing room together by showing authority on and off the pitch.

Romero’s Argentine teammate, and current Atletico Madrid player, Julian Alvarez, expressed his disappointment at not seeing the 27-year-old join the La Liga giants in the summer despite intense transfer links. Speaking to Marca (via Sport Witness), Alvarez said:

“Yes, yes. Obviously, I would have liked to. Cuti is one of the best defenders in the world. I spend time with him for the national team, and I really think he’s a star, a competitive animal, very strong defensively. And yes, I had a few conversations with him, and it didn’t happen for various reasons, but hopefully one day we’ll be able to play together.”

Alvarez wanted to play alongside his international teammate Cristian Romero at Atletico Madrid this season. The prolific striker believes that Romero is one of the best centre-backs in the world, whose competitive nature and strong defensive qualities would make him a standout player in Spain. He still hopes to play alongside Romero one day, hinting at a possible reunion in the future.

Cristian Romero has all the attributes needed to become a future legend at Tottenham if he chooses to stay at the club long term. The 27-year-old has already made history at N17, helping the club win the Europa League against all odds. The onus now falls on him to maintain consistency and keep performing well under Thomas Frank. His technical quality is undeniable, and he has already formed a strong partnership at the back with Micky van de Ven.

Will Romero etch his name into the club’s history books? Or will he eventually move on to pastures new in the coming years? Only time will tell. For now, the Argentine must focus on performing well and maintaining his strong form as the season progresses.
