Manchester United continue to shape their squad ahead of a demanding new season, with recruitment plans well underway across multiple positions.
Michael Carrick’s side are expected to build on their strong finish to last season, with the club aiming to stay competitive in both domestic and European competitions.
The summer window has already seen United move quickly, with a focus on strengthening depth and versatility.
On the women’s side, Manchester United have also been active as they prepare for another push in the Women’s Super League.
Marc Skinner’s team are looking to add quality across the back line, with several targets identified to improve their defence.
That strategy has now seen them secure an important addition ahead of the new campaign.
Manchester United have confirmed, via their website, the signing of Atletico Madrid defender Andrea Medina on a free transfer until June 2029.
Andrea Medina said, “Manchester United has an incredible history, and I am excited to join a team that is determined to write its own chapter at one of the most important clubs in the world.
“Competing against United last season showed me how strong the group is and just how much this club means to our supporters.
“The passion from everyone who travelled over to Madrid was unbelievable, that atmosphere stayed with me and I cannot wait to represent you every time I step onto the pitch.
“I am ready for the next stage of my career and to show my qualities in the intensity of the English game.”
Matt Johnson, Director of Women’s Football at Manchester United, said, “Andrea has all of the technical attributes, character and determination required to thrive at Manchester United.
“She is a player who we have admired for a long time and we are delighted to add her unique qualities to our group, particularly after significant interest from clubs across Europe.
“Despite being only 22, and still having enormous potential to develop, Andrea already has excellent experience. Everyone at the club is excited to help her to achieve her ambitions in the years ahead.”
Andrea Medina arrives at Old Trafford after being tracked by United for an extended period, with club scouts impressed by her ability to operate across multiple defensive roles.
Naturally a left-back, she can also feature at centre-back and as a wing-back, giving United valuable tactical options going into the new season.
The Spaniard also brings strong international experience, having been part of Spain’s successful youth setup that won the 2022 Under-20 World Cup.
Her development has continued at senior level, with Medina recently included in Spain’s 25-player squad for upcoming Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
Her departure follows Atletico Madrid’s fourth-place finish in Liga F, a result that saw them miss out on Champions League qualification. After the conclusion of their campaign, the Spanish club confirmed a number of exits from the squad, with Medina among those leaving.
Atletico Madrid said on their official website: “Andrea Medina, Vilde Boe Risa, Sheila Guijarro, and Patricia Larque will not be continuing with the club next season.”
They added,”The club thanks them for their effort and hard work over the past several seasons and wishes them the best of luck in their future endeavors.”
