Atletico Madrid star ignites season with scorching form

Julian Alvarez’s start to the 2025-26 season has been anything but straightforward.

The Argentine striker opened with a late winner against Espanyol on the opening weekend, only to go four straight La Liga matches and two internationals without finding the net. Questions began to surface, but Alvarez emphatically silenced them.

A hat trick against Rayo Vallecano in late September reignited his campaign and set the tone for decisive performances in the Madrid derby and the Champions League victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday. The 25-year-old had already established himself as indispensable in his first season at Atletico, finishing 2024-25 as the club’s top scorer with 29 goals across all competitions, including 17 in La Liga.

His debut campaign showed he could adapt to Diego Simeone’s system and thrive in a league defined by physical battles and tactical discipline. Now, in his second year, he looks ready to take his influence to another level.

Julian Alvarez and his blistering early season turning point

The turning point came with that three-goal display against Vallecano, where his movement, pressing and ruthless finishing swung momentum firmly back in his favor. Shortly after, he produced one of his finest performances in an Atletico shirt during the Madrid derby. He scored twice, first from the penalty spot, then with a stunning free kick, as Los Rojiblancos roared back from 2-1 down to thrash city rival Real Madrid, 5-2.

If that game highlighted his knack for rising to the occasion, the Champions League only highlights it further. Against Frankfurt on Tuesday, Alvarez delivered a complete forward’s performance, scoring once and providing two assists in a dominant 5-1 win. It was a display that showcased not only his technical quality but also his growing confidence to dictate games on Europe’s biggest stage.

Beyond the numbers, Alvarez has become a galvanizing figure in Simeone’s attack. Atletico boasts options in Antoine Griezmann and Alexander Sorloth, but it is Alvarez’s blend of relentless pressing, creativity and clinical finishing that makes him the focal point.

That combination of consistency and explosiveness explains why Alvarez is now viewed as central to Atletico’s ambitions. From a promising recruit at Manchester City, he has grown into the player driving its domestic title challenge and European push. If his current form continues, this could be the season that cements his status as one of Europe’s most complete forwards.
