Atletico Madrid to make bid for Mason Greenwood

Mason Greenwood has spent two seasons in the south of France rebuilding himself into one of the most productive forwards in Europe.

The 24-year-old joined Marseille from Manchester United in 2024 and has scored freely ever since, sharing the Ligue 1 Golden Boot in his first season on 21 goals before hitting 26 across all competitions in his second.

That form has turned him into one of the most chased names of the summer, and Fenerbahce were among the first to move.

Presidential candidate Hakan Safi made Greenwood a centrepiece of his election campaign, claiming from the congress podium that a four-year agreement was already in place, as Fabrizio Romano reported.

However, Safi lost June’s presidential vote to Aziz Yildirim, collapsing that potential move.

Now, L’Equipe report that Atletico Madrid have joined the race and are preparing to move for the former England international.

The report explains that Diego Simeone sees Greenwood as a finisher capable of sharpening his attack, particularly if Julian Alvarez leaves the Metropolitano this summer.

L’Equipe add that Atletico have already made enquiries with both Marseille and Manchester United over a possible deal.

Marseille are understood to want around £43 million (€50 million) for their leading scorer, having paid a fraction of that fee to sign him two years ago.

Roma and Juventus have also been credited with an interest, meaning the Ligue 1 side are unlikely to be short of suitors.

For Manchester United, any sale carries a direct financial upside written into the original deal as The Red Devils still hold 40% of Greenwood’s economic rights.

As such, a move in the region of £43 million (€50 million) would return a substantial sum to Old Trafford, helping fund the squad rebuild United are already midway through under Michael Carrick.

Now, the first move belongs to Simeone, with Marseille braced to lose their top scorer and United watching on to collect.
