Aurelien Tchouameni officially completes medical

Manchester United’s midfield has already undergone major surgery this summer as Michael Carrick looks to reshape his options ahead of the new season.

The arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have given the Reds two fresh additions in the engine room, with the pair costing a combined £90million.

However, Casemiro’s departure and a serious injury to Manuel Ugarte have left Carrick still needing more depth in the middle of the pitch.

United had previously explored several midfield targets, with the club also considering options such as Manu Kone and Carlos Baleba during their summer recruitment plans.

Alex Scott was also heavily linked with a move to the Red Devils this summer but that looks increasingly less likely to happen.

One name, though, had emerged as a particularly ambitious target for the Reds after being monitored towards the end of last season.

Manchester United’s hopes of signing Aurelien Tchouameni have now effectively been ended after the Real Madrid midfielder returned to Spain and completed his pre-season medical, as seen on Madrid’s X account.

The 26-year-old France international has also agreed a new five-year contract with the Spanish giants, making a move to Old Trafford increasingly unlikely.

Aurelien Tchouameni had reportedly been viewed as a dream signing by Carrick, who remains keen to strengthen his midfield despite United’s significant investment already this summer.

The midfielder had been enjoying a three-week break following France’s World Cup campaign before returning to Madrid for pre-season.

United had explored the possibility of a deal near the end of the 2025/26 season and continued to hold hope of making something happen, but Madrid’s decision to tie Tchouameni down to a fresh long-term agreement has shut that door.

For Carrick, the search for another midfielder therefore continues, with Ugarte’s injury and Casemiro’s exit leaving the Reds with a problem that two new arrivals have not completely solved.
