Barcelona confirmed one of the worst-kept football secrets of the week when the Catalan club announced the signing of United States Men's National Team and Ajax fullback Sergino Dest.
Reports emerged on Tuesday that the 19-year-old was in Barcelona ahead of the anticipated move that the club explained included a €21 million transfer fee plus a potential €5 million in variables. Dest is signed through the 2024-25 European season and carries a €400 million buyout clause.
Dest wore the No. 2 shirt in his unveiling. It's expected that he will immediately compete for first-team football and could debut for Barcelona when they host Sevilla on Sunday. He replaces Nelson Semedo, who was sold to Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers last week.
Dest only made his first Eredivisie appearance for Ajax in August 2019 but had drawn interest from massive clubs such as Barca and European champions Bayern Munich. Born in Holland, Dest committed his international future to the U.S. last October when he was also eligible to represent the Netherlands in major competitions.
