Alejandro Balde could become a major January opportunity for Manchester United, with Barcelona increasingly determined to offload the defender.
The Spanish international was heavily linked with Old Trafford during the summer, but United ultimately failed to strengthen at left-back.
That decision has become one of the most glaring mistakes of INEOS’ summer recruitment strategy.
Despite spending approximately £170 million, United concentrated on midfield reinforcements, leaving Luke Shaw as their only established specialist left-back.
Patrick Dorgu has primarily operated further forward under Michael Carrick, while his recent hamstring injury has further complicated the situation.
The Dane returned to training on Monday, but Shaw remains sidelined, forcing Carrick to rely on makeshift defensive arrangements.
Diogo Dalot has deputised on the left, while Ayden Heaven was previously deployed out of position against Atletico Madrid.
United’s disastrous results have only intensified criticism of their recruitment decisions.
Saturday’s 2-0 defeat against Chelsea extended their winless run to nine matches, leaving Carrick’s side 17th in the Premier League.
United have recorded just two victories in 13 competitive matches, with their manager fighting to save his job.
Centre Devils recently reported that Barcelona are preparing to offload Balde in January as Hansi Flick seeks defensive reinforcements.
Now, a fresh development could make the proposed transfer more financially attractive.
According to SPORT, Barcelona are prepared to consider offers of €40 million or more for Balde.
That represents a reduction from the €45 million valuation previously reported in August, when United were exploring a move for the defender.
Barcelona would prefer a permanent sale, although a loan containing a mandatory purchase obligation could also be accepted.
The Catalan club want to generate funds for a centre-back signing, with Balde no longer considered central to Flick’s plans.
His agent, Jorge Mendes, has been exploring opportunities across Europe, holding preliminary discussions with interested clubs.
SPORT specifically identifies Manchester United and Chelsea as the two English sides to have enquired about Balde’s situation.
Juventus and Roma have also expressed interest, although their preference for loan arrangements presents an obstacle.
No formal offer has emerged, meaning United must still decide whether to revive their pursuit when the January window opens.
