Barcelona’s most exciting transfer pursuit of the summer may already be slipping through their fingers. According to Luis F. Rojo and José Félix Díaz of MARCA, the Catalan club has not yet found the formula to guarantee the registration of Nico Williams, casting serious doubt on a move that just days ago seemed like a formality.

Barça are not as hopeful as they were just a few days ago,  the report states, citing growing frustration behind the scenes as financial limitations once again obstruct what should be a defining signing for the club.

This is not just another failed negotiation. This is a potentially devastating miss for a club that has become all too familiar with “what could’ve been.”

The perfect fit from the perfect summer

Barcelona went all-in on Nico Williams last summer after his breakout showing at Euro 2024, where he tormented fullbacks on the left flank and looked every bit a world-class winger. Lining up opposite close friend and club phenom Lamine Yamal, Williams looked like he already belonged at Camp Nou.

That wasn’t just chemistry — it was the beginning of something generational. Barcelona knew it. Nico knew it. The fans knew it.

But out of respect for Athletic Club, the team that developed him, Williams opted to stay for another season in Bilbao. It was the right move at the time. He didn’t want to leave on a sour note. And it seemed like everything was being timed perfectly for a move in 2025.

Wanted by Europe’s elite — but he only has eyes for Barça

This summer, the interest in Nico Williams has grown exponentially. Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and Arsenal have all been linked with the 22-year-old, who is one of the most two-footed and intelligent wingers in Europe. His speed, 1v1 dribbling, and maturity on the ball make him a dream signing for any top side in need of width.

But through it all, Nico’s preference has remained the same: Barcelona.

He sees himself alongside Yamal on the opposite flank, forming what could be the most dynamic wing duo in football. With Raphinha as a proven option, Barcelona’s right side is already dangerous. But Nico could finally give them the right-footed balance on the left they’ve lacked.

This is more than a footballing fit. It’s a stylistic identity. It’s the next era of Barça, built around Spanish brilliance and homegrown connections.

And yet… it’s all slipping away

The only problem? The books. Again.

Barcelona still can’t guarantee Nico Williams’ registration, even if they activate his release clause or negotiate a deal. FFP limitations and the lingering consequences of past financial mismanagement are rearing their heads again — and this time, the price might be missing out on a generational player who wants to come.

This should have been a slam dunk. Instead, Barça are now at risk of striking out, watching a player tailor-made for their future slip away to one of their European rivals — perhaps for good.

Barcelona’s top transfer target has never been closer… and never felt further away.
