Barcelona set Alejandro Balde asking price

Manchester United’s search for defensive reinforcements continues to dominate the closing stages of the transfer window.

Michael Carrick’s side head into the final week still hunting a long-term left-back option to compete with Luke Shaw.

Patrick Dorgu has largely been utilised further forward since Carrick came in last season, leaving Shaw as United’s only recognised specialist in that role.

Lewis Hall had emerged as United’s top target earlier in the window, though he now looks set to remain at Newcastle.

That situation has forced Carrick’s recruitment staff to explore alternative routes to strengthen the position.

Barcelona have valued Alejandro Balde at €45million, around £38.5million, with United understood to prefer a loan deal instead, according to talkSPORT.

The interest in Alejandro Balde was first revealed last week, alongside a parallel interest in RB Leipzig captain David Raum.

Racing Club’s Jorge Salinas has also emerged as another name on United’s radar as they weigh up their options at left-back.

Barcelona’s asking price for Balde could prove a significant obstacle for United as they assess the financial viability of a deal.

Doubts over any move being completed before next week’s deadline have grown following his absence from Barcelona’s LaLiga opener.

Hansi Flick’s side began their title defence with a comfortable 5-0 win away at Elche on Sunday.

Balde, however, was left out of the matchday squad entirely for that fixture.

Flick has publicly demanded 100% committed players, with the Spaniard’s future at Camp Nou increasingly uncertain.

Reports in Spain suggest Balde is set for a face-to-face meeting with the manager to discuss his standing within the squad.

Benfica have also entered the picture, submitting a formal offer as they look to take advantage of Barcelona’s willingness to sell.

It was reported this week that Balde currently has three separate offers on the table, with United understood to be leading the race.

United’s need for cover at left-back was underlined by their 2-0 defeat to Hull City in the season opener.

Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have both rotated at right-back, but options remain far thinner on the opposite flank.

Any deal for Balde, whether permanent or on loan, would likely need to be finalised quickly given the limited time remaining.

Carrick’s side are expected to continue weighing up all three left-back targets as the deadline approaches.
