A year ago, Arsenal were in the market for a new midfielder, and Fichajes reported that the Gunners wanted to add Frenkie de Jong to their squad from Barcelona.
The Catalans did not appear prepared to lose the Dutchman, while De Jong has always been happy to remain at Barcelona. As a result, he never pushed to leave the club during that transfer window.
There was not even formal contact between the two clubs, and Arsenal eventually entered the season with Martin Zubimendi as their main new midfield arrival. The Spaniard went on to play an important role as the Gunners won the Premier League title.
This summer, Arsenal have added Bruno Guimaraes to their midfield from Newcastle United, while Zubimendi has struggled to secure regular game time so far. The competition for places could become even stronger if another midfielder arrives.
Arsenal could be encouraged by reports that Barcelona are now prepared to sell De Jong. The Dutchman remains an experienced midfielder, but the Catalans appear ready to consider his departure if they receive the right offer.
According to Fichajes, Barcelona have set an asking price of €65 million for De Jong. The reported package would include €50 million as a guaranteed fee, with the remaining amount coming through add-ons.
The development could give Arsenal another opportunity to pursue a player they previously admired. Although the Gunners have strengthened their midfield since then, De Jong could still represent an attractive option if the club decide they need further quality in the position.
Barcelona reportedly recognise that this could be their best opportunity to offload De Jong and are now open to allowing him to leave at the end of the season for the right fee.
For Arsenal, the situation will be worth monitoring. The Gunners have already invested heavily in their midfield, but the possibility of signing an experienced player of De Jong’s quality could still appeal to them.
Zubimendi’s current battle for regular game time also means another addition would create even more competition within the squad. Arsenal would therefore have to decide whether De Jong represents the right opportunity.
The midfielder’s preference to remain at Barcelona previously prevented a potential move from developing. However, with the Catalans now reportedly willing to sell, the circumstances have changed significantly, and Arsenal could have another chance to consider a move.
