After taking the three points in their game against Eintracht Frankfurt , FC Barcelona returned to La Liga. This time, the Catalan giants were set to face Osasuna, a team sitting in the lower half of the standings. Many fans expected an easy knockout at the newly renovated Camp Nou. Unfortunately, they were left wanting.
The start of the game was pretty even, with both teams noting chances to score. Osasuna created a few good actions that could have ended in a goal, had it not been for Joan Garcia’s impressive defences. On the other side of the field, Barcelona was bombarding their opponent’s net, but to no avail.
The situation seemed to change in the 24th minute, when Raphinha expertly maneuvered between Osasuna’s defenders, shooting the ball towards Marcus Rashford. He crossed it to Ferran Torres, already waiting in the penalty box. To finish off the beautiful action, El Tiburón used his head to direct it towards the net. Just as the fans began celebrating, the VAR team contacted the referee to let him know that, early in the action, one of the players was offside. The goal was promptly disallowed.
This wasn’t Ferran’s only unused chance this match. Around the 30-minute mark, Lamine Yamal dribbled past Osasuna’s defence and delivered a cross to his teammate. El Tiburón tried to perform an overhead kick, but ended up missing the net. In the end, there was nothing that Barcelona could do. The first half finished at a disappointing 0:0.
Desperate for a change in score, Barcelona came into the second half with new determination. They pressed Osasuna from he very first moments, and yet still couldn’t create a good enough situation. For a while, it seemed like the whole match might end without any changes in the score.
This match, it was Raphinha who became his team’s salvation. In the 70th minute, Pedri sent the ball towards him, and he shot it towards Osasuna’s goal. There was nothing the goalkeeper could do to stop it from going in. While the glory of scoring went to Raphinha, out of the two players, it was Pedri who truly deserved recognition for the incredible match he played. He created situation after situation, undeterred by the fact that many of them were wasted through no fault of his own. He was almost flawless on the field, once again proving why he is the cornerstone of his team.
Raphinha’s day wasn’t done quite yet. In the 86th minute, he increased his team’s lead. He was assisted by an Osasuna player, Alejandro Catena. As the man tried to kick away a dangerous ball shot by Jules Kounde, he accidentally passed it right to the Brazilian. With that, Barcelona secured the win.
Although the match wasn’t one of Blaugrana’s best, it did end with a win and three points added to their tally . They will finish another round of La Liga with a significant lead over Real Madrid, the team in second. For now, they are on the perfect trajectory to take the league’s title for the second year in a row.
