Mason Greenwood has emerged as a major talking point in Spain after Barcelona considered adding him to their attack.

The former Manchester United forward enjoyed an excellent 2025/26 campaign in France.

He recorded 26 goals and 11 assists across all competitions for Marseille.

Those numbers earned him a place in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year and increased interest in his future.

Barcelona had already used Marcus Rashford on loan last season as Hansi Flick searched for more options in wide areas.

Rashford contributed 14 goals and 11 assists during the club’s title-winning campaign.

However, Barcelona decided not to activate the €30 million purchase option included in his agreement.

The England international is therefore expected to report back to Carrington following his summer break.

Barcelona have continued exploring several attacking targets as their financial situation forces the club to prepare different options.

Greenwood’s ability to play across the front line made him an attractive candidate following his prolific season.

Mason Greenwood monitored by Barcelona

According to Spanish outlet SPORT, Barcelona’s sporting department monitored Greenwood during recent months.

The report states that his name reached the club’s recruitment team as they searched for ambitious targets and more realistic alternatives.

However, Barcelona’s interest never progressed beyond the early stages.

The Spanish champions eventually focused on other wide players, including Karim Adeyemi and Anthony Gordon.

Greenwood has since completed a permanent move to Fenerbahce.

The Turkish club paid Marseille €39 million and handed the 24-year-old a four-year contract.

Manchester United also received more than €10 million through the sell-on clause included when Greenwood left Old Trafford.

The winger had spent two productive seasons in Marseille after rebuilding his career away from the Premier League.

He scored 22 goals and provided five assists during his first campaign before improving those numbers last season.

Barcelona also continue investing in emerging talent, with Jesse Bisiwu expected to arrive from Club Brugge.

Therefore, the opportunity to sign Greenwood has now passed, despite the former United academy graduate appearing on the club’s transfer shortlist.
