Having finished the group stage in the top five, FC Barcelona got a short break from playing in the European competitions. This week, they returned to foreign fields for a match against the British Newcastle United, a team they had already beaten earlier in the season.
From the very first minutes of the game, it was clear that both teams were hungry for victory. Time after time, things got heated by Barcelona’s net, keeping Joan García busy. The Catalan team wasn’t calm either, noting just as many attempts. The game jumped from one half to another, never slowing down for more than a few seconds.
The first half ended without a goal scored by either of the team, despite all the commendable efforts. While it may not have been what the fans were expecting, it provided enough excitement to keep them on their toes. Both Barcelona and Newcastle showed that they were not to be written off before the final whistle.
The teasing dance continued after the break. Newcastle was more in control, with attack after attack heating things up by Barcelona’s net. The ball rarely approached Aaron Ramsdale, while still consistently bothering his Catalan counterpart, García.
The stadium roared with 15 minutes of standard time left on the clock, as Newcastle first hit the bar and then put the ball in Barcelona’s net. Before the celebrations could begin, the goal was deemed to have been offside, leaving the score at a disappointing 0:0.
Newcastle rectified their mistake in the 86th minute. It was then that Harvey Barnes got the ball past García. After a game that had been building up to that moment, the British team took the lead.
That doesn’t mean that the match was over. As minutes ticked down, everything was pointing towards the host’s victory. Then, after the added time had run out, in the last action of the game, Dani Olmo was fouled by Newcastle’s net. A penalty was awarded to Barcelona and Lamine Yamal was the man who converted into a goal. Thanks to his perfect aim, the game ended in a draw.
While the final score might seem less than exciting, the game was anything but. Both teams spent the 90 minutes at an incredibly high pace, providing continuous action and impressive attacks. The second leg of their rivalry will take place on March 18, this time at the iconic Camp Nou.
