Manchester United’s focus is already beginning to shift ahead of the summer.

The club’s push to fix attacking issues has left other areas needing urgent attention.

With a return to the Champions League on the horizon, the demands on the squad are only going to increase.

There is also a growing acceptance internally that the current midfield setup lacks the intensity required at the highest level.

As a result, significant movement in that department now feels inevitable.

Central midfield has emerged as the top priority, with United identifying multiple targets as they look to inject energy and mobility into the side.

Among those being closely monitored is Elliot Anderson, who has quickly risen to the top of the shortlist following his performances at Nottingham Forest.

The English midfielder is expected to attract serious interest, with Bayern Munich already making moves to position themselves strongly in the race, as reported by the Daily Mail.

United are also weighing up several alternative options, including Carlos Baleba, Tyler Adams, Adam Wharton, Joao Gomes, Sandro Tonali and Felix Nmecha.

Each of those players offers a different profile, but they all share key attributes that United are currently lacking.

That contrast has become more apparent when compared to Casemiro, whose influence remains significant but whose physical level is no longer what it once was.

Despite that, replacing the Brazilian is far from straightforward, as his leadership, experience and eye for goal still provide qualities that cannot easily be replicated.

There is also the financial reality to consider, with players like Tonali expected to command substantial fees, making negotiations far from simple.

Elliot Anderson, meanwhile, is shaping up to be one of the most sought-after midfielders in the upcoming window, which could further complicate United’s plans.

With the club aiming to compete on multiple fronts next season, there is an understanding that one addition may not be enough.

Instead, United could look to bring in two or even three midfielders to properly refresh the engine room.

Whether they are able to secure their preferred targets remains uncertain, but what is clear is that a major overhaul in midfield is now firmly on the agenda.
