Chelsea’s deadline day striker run-around is going to be remembered for a long time.
Having agreed a big deal to send Nicolas Jackson to Bayern Munich, the Blues suddenly were forced to try and cancel the deal because of an injury to Liam Delap.
After 24 hours of chaos, they were able to cancel Marc Guiu’s loan to Sunderland instead. That then meant that Jackson was free to go.
Nizaar Kinsella’s piece for the BBC today covers all that, and also mentions another interesting angle.
As well as a deadline day panic which saw them sound out moves like one for Conrad Harder of Sporting, the Blues were also thinking a little longer term.
They wanted cover for this season, but they didn’t really want to sign anyone young, good and expensive (like Harder). Why? Because it sounds like they’ve got their striker addition for next summer already lined up.
Kinsella claims that “Chelsea also factored in Strasbourg striker Emanuel Emegha when making the decision [to not sign anyone].”
Their sister club’s 22 year old rising star is “seen internally as a future Netherlands international and player capable of featuring for Chelsea or in the Premier League soon.”
“The decision not to sign Harder and to work with Guiu was also made with Emegha’s future development in mind.”
Chelsea are bound to be linked to their sister club’s best players all the time, and the links to Emegha have been around ever since he started establishing himself last season.
However we agree with the call here to let him have another year of playing regularly and developing before bringing him to Chelsea. It helps Strasbourg and it helps us.
