BBC: This Chelsea player 'excelled' in attacking the ball and the Blues need more of it

There were big question marks for Enzo Maresca about who to pick at centre back last night as Chelsea faced Lincoln, especially when we found out that Josh Acheampong had the flu.

The Chelsea boss has been working Wesley Fofana back to full fitness after his latest long injury, and would rather have left him out entirely, we’re sure.

Fofana impresses against physical lower league opposition

But in the end he did have to use him, and the defender did really well. On BBC 5Live, Chris Sutton was full of praise for how the defender did:

“Although Lincoln had free-kicks and throw-ins, I thought Fofana, especially, excelled in terms of attacking the ball inside his own box,” the usually negative Sutton said.

“It’s just a pity from Lincoln’s perspective that they couldn’t put [Filip] Jorgensen under a little bit more pressure. That was down to the quality of the Chelsea centre-halves as well. When balls were thrown in, they defended the box really, really well.”

The problem is that after playing last night, he’s probably not going to be considered ready to play again on Saturday. Assuming he’s on the Reece James recovery plan, that means max one start a week, at least for the next few months. Tosin Adarabioyo will come back in to partner Trevoh Chalobah.

Sutton praises George strike

Sutton also had nice words for Tyrique George, who started the comeback with a superb goal just after half time. His powerful hit got lots of love from the pundit:

“This is some finish, some strike from George. The ball just sits and he lashes it on the half volley, right footed and it hammers off the post. Jeacok had absolutely no chance. No goalkeeper in the world is stopping that.”
