Because of Dedic: Newcastle's 'future captain' looks finished

To no surprise, it is a season of transition at St James' Park. The second Eddie Howe chose to depart, joining the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, expectations were always likely to change at Newcastle United.

The task for Matthias Jaissle since then has been to manage those expectations. Whether an early exit in the Carabao Cup at the hands of Everton was part of that feels unlikely, however. It's in those games that fans were expecting a result to build on.

And it is in those results that Jaissle will be learning the most about his side and just who he will decide to keep around should he establish himself on Tyneside.

Why Amar Dedic is proving to be unlikely bright spark

When assessing their failure in the last 12 months, the recruitment team will have plenty to answer for. They've failed to replace top stars on more than one ocassion and struggled to land their top targets. Whether it's been when rebuilding their frontline or adding to their midfield, Newcastle have continued to fail.

That's not so say there's been no bright sparks, however. Malick Thiaw looks like the future of Newcastle's backline and joining him is Amar Dedic.

The 24-year-old right-back arrived as a relatively unknown star in the summer, arriving from Benfica for around £29.5m, but has since been one of few standouts in Jaissle's side.

He didn't have an easy task, either. Dedic has had the task of stepping in for the injured Tino Livramento - a player who has been linked with a big move away more than once. The highest praise that Newcastle fans can offer their new right-back, however, is that they've not missed Livramento.

With two assists to his name so far this season, Dedic is contributing to Newcastle's frontline, which has desperately needed the creativity, but crucially, he has also been dribbled past just once in the Premier League in 448 minutes.

When the Magpies need stability, the former Benfica man has provided exactly that down the right-hand side.

Dedic emergence may spell the end for Newcastle star

Whilst Dedic's rise may be good news for Jaissle, it's not good news for a number of Newcastle stars who are hoping to have a future in the manager's backline.

That right-hand side is very much set if the 24-year-old turns a good start into an excellent debut season. And that may spell the end for Livramento at St James' Park.

Once among Newcastle's best players, the versatile fullback even looked destined for a move to Manchester City, before that failed to come into fruition. It looked like good news for the Magpies at the time. They kept their star instead of cashing in for around £75m.

They believed they had dodged a major bullet. The truth, however, is that Man City were the one's doing their best audition for the Matrix, as they ducked out of what could have been a disastrous signing.

Not many will deny Livramento's talent. Former Premier League star Theo Walcott even dubbed him a "future England captain" at the peak of his form. Ultimately, as Walcott knows himself, that talent quickly becomes wasted when injuries take over.

With Dedic on the rise, Livramento's injury problems could end his Newcastle career once and for all. There may not be a big-money move to Man City waiting for him this time, either.

The right-back has already missed eight games this season on top of the 33 that he missed in the previous campaign. It is an unsustainable struggle and one which has already cost him his place at St James' Park.
