Reiss Nelson could be set for a move away from England this summer as Benfica consider a transfer for the Arsenal winger in an effort to help him revive his career after several difficult seasons.
The winger is familiar with Benfica manager Marco Silva, having previously worked under him during one of his loan spells at Fulham. Silva is believed to be keen on a reunion with Nelson, having already seen his qualities at close range.
Nelson is regarded as one of the finest graduates to emerge from Arsenal’s academy, but he has never managed to establish himself as a regular member of the first team. Instead, he has spent much of the past few seasons gaining experience on loan.
Although Arsenal have sold Leandro Trossard, Nelson is still not expected to become a regular part of the first team. As a result, another departure appears likely during the current transfer window.
According to Sport Witness, Benfica could offer Nelson the opportunity to reunite with Silva in Portugal. The report suggests the manager remains interested in the winger despite the injury problems that affected him during their time together at Fulham.
Silva reportedly believes Nelson possesses significant talent and feels the winger could have achieved more under his guidance had injuries not disrupted his progress. A reunion at Benfica would provide both men with another opportunity to work together.
Arsenal are willing to allow Nelson to leave this summer and would prefer to complete a permanent transfer. However, the Gunners are also prepared to consider another loan move if that proves to be the most suitable solution.
A move to Portugal could offer Nelson the stability he has been seeking after several years of uncertainty. Regular football under a manager who already knows his abilities may provide the platform he needs to rebuild his career and fulfil the potential that made him one of Arsenal’s most highly rated academy graduates.
