The knockout phase playoff of the Champions League will be played over two legs, and the first leg matchups will be played this week. One of the matchups is between Benfica and Real Madrid.

Both teams recently played each other in the Champions League during the league phase on the final matchday last month.

Ahead of this match, Benfica and Real Madrid played in their respective leagues over the weekend. Benfica defeated Santa Clara 2-1 in the Liga Portugal away from home, with an own goal and a goal from Vangelis Pavlidis.

Real Madrid defeated Real Sociedad 4-1 at home with two goals from Vinicius Junior, a goal from Gonzalo Garcia, and a goal from Federico Valverde.

In the 8th matchday of the league phase of the Champions League this season, Benfica defeated Real Madrid 4-2 at home in the Estadio Da Luz. Benfica's win sent them to the knockout stage playoffs and also stopped Real Madrid from reaching the top eight positions in the UCL table.

In the previous Benfica vs Real Madrid match, Kylian Mbappe scored two goals for Los Blancos, but two goals from Andreas Schjelderup, a goal from Vangelis Pavlidis, and a dramatic last-minute goal from the goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin gave Benfica the win.
