Manchester United have experienced plenty of change in the dugout over the last year, with Michael Carrick now leading the club into a new era.

Ruben Amorim was sacked in January after around 14 months in charge, bringing an early end to his difficult spell at Old Trafford.

Carrick subsequently took over on an interim basis and completely transformed United’s fortunes.

His impressive spell eventually earned him the permanent position ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

United have also had some interesting connections with Birmingham City over the years.

Former Red Devils captain Steve Bruce enjoyed considerable success as Birmingham manager, guiding the club to the Premier League twice.

More recently, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney was appointed Birmingham manager in October 2023.

However, his time at St Andrew’s proved short-lived and he was dismissed in January 2024 after just 15 matches in charge.

Now another connection has emerged between the two clubs, with Birmingham officially recruiting someone directly from United.

Birmingham City appoint Manchester United coach

Birmingham City have officially confirmed the appointment of Ben Chapman as Goalkeeping Coach for their women’s team.

The Blues announced the news on their official website as head coach Amy Merricks completed her coaching staff ahead of the 2026/27 Women’s Super League season.

Chapman arrives directly from Manchester United, where he worked as part of the Professional Game Academy and first-team coaching setup.

He has already built up considerable experience despite originally beginning his sporting career as a professional cricketer.

Before working at United, Chapman held coaching roles with Stoke City Women, Wigan Athletic and Salford City.

He has also worked within the Wales Women’s youth setup.

Chapman joins Birmingham alongside Mark Beard, who has been appointed Assistant Head Coach.

Merricks welcomed both additions and highlighted the different qualities and experience they will bring to her staff.

Director of Women’s Football Hope Powell also praised the appointments as Birmingham prepare for their return to the WSL.

For Chapman, the move brings his spell at Manchester United to an end and adds another chapter to the long-running connections between the Red Devils and Birmingham City.
