Blue Cards to Be Trialed by Soccer Lawmakers IFAB
IMAGO/MIS

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) will announce on Friday its plans to trial blue cards in professional soccer.

A blue card will be used to send a player off the field for a period of 10 minutes, similar to a sin bin as used in rugby.

Trials at amateur level have already seen blue cards issued for dissent. However, they could also be used to punish cynical fouls during the next round of testing.

It is not yet clear when the new trials will begin or which competitions will be involved.

England's Premier League will not take part in the early phase of any trials.

However, according to The Athletic, blue cards might be used during next season's FA Cup.

IFAB was founded in 1886 - 18 years before FIFA was established.

FIFA has recognized IFAB's jurisdiction over the Laws of the Game for well over a century.
