Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is likely to be sacked once the season ends. The Lilywhites are enduring a disastrous domestic campaign under the Australian manager. They are languishing in the bottom half of the league table. Ange’s men are also on their way to record the club’s lowest ever points tally in a single Premier League season.
The ex-Celtic boss has come under a lot of scrutiny in recent months as well. The relationship with the fans has also come under the microscope. However, there is still time to get the fans and the media back on his side. The Lilywhites are still fighting hard in the Europa League and they are within touching distance of winning the competition. The 59-year-old has the chance of leading the club to their first ever major trophy in 17 years.
But winning the competition will just paper over the cracks. The problems at the club lie deeper than that and the multiple protests held by the fans suggest the same. Daniel Levy needs to make sure that the right decision is taken regarding Ange’s future at N17. The club faces a massive summer and hiring the right manager will go a long way in ensuring Spurs compete for titles next season.
Tottenham are active in the market to find a managerial replacement for next season. The Lilywhites favour Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola to replace Ange Postecoglou at the helm. However, it is reported that Iraola is set to snub the North London club and stay at Vitality Stadium for next season. The Spaniard is also willing to extend his contract with the Cherries and wants to continue his project at the South Coast club.
Dan Plumley, a football finance expert, also believes that Tottenham cannot just ‘throw money’ on managers and expect them to come. Speaking to Tottenham News, Plumley said,
“You look at what motivates a manager and if he doesn’t want to go to Tottenham, look at what Bournemouth are doing. He’s developing a good squad of players, they’ve just opened a new training ground, and the infrastructure looks really impressive, they’re having a good season and pushing for Europe, which is phenomenal given where they’ve been.”
The finance expert added,
“The Tottenham job, despite all the positives of the club, stadium, the potential and some of the players they’ve got, it might not be the most attractive managerial job at the moment, especially if you have a good thing going elsewhere. There is no guarantee that throwing money at a manager gets you the manager that you want; there are other factors at play.”
Plumley pointed out that Andoni Iraola is developing players at Bournemouth and pushing for European football for next season. He insisted that the Cherries are on an upward curve and Iraola wants to stay there. Dan Plumley also suggested that Spurs cannot go around and splash money on managers and expect them to join the club without considering other factors.
Daniel Levy must decide Ange Postecoglou’s future quickly. The Spurs chairman cannot wait for long as the Lilywhites might miss out on their managerial targets once the transfer window opens. Fans have also started getting anxious and are hoping that the club makes the right decision regarding Big Ange’s future.
