Brendan Rodgers has insisted he has no regrets regarding the remarks he made after Sunday’s match about comparing his current group of players to Honda Civics rather than Ferraris….
On Sunday following Celtic’s abysmal 2-0 defeat to Dundee at Dens Park, the Hoops boss drew a comparison between his present team and a Honda Civic, contrasting it with last season’s “Ferrari” of a squad.
Given the players’ confidence has evidently been shot to pieces, it was quite the remark from Rodgers who pulled no punches regarding what he thought about of his current squad’s quality.
Speaking at yesterday’s media conference to The Celtic Star and the mainstream media, Brendan Rodgers said via Celtic’s official YouTube channel: “I don’t know because I haven’t seen or read or heard anything, but it was based around the speed in our team,” the Irishman said.
“Clearly, it’s not the same as what we had last season, and I’m pretty sure both of those cars have got a different speed, so that was the reference to that.
“Yeah, I’m not really worried [about it impacting the players], to be honest. You can’t please everyone, and I’m not going to start trying to do that now. The players know that I’m with them, I’ve always been with them, and our focus is now on performing and performing to our best level.
“Listen, it’s something that I said at the time, and I said it because I felt it. So I’ve got no regret now.”
The Celtic boss was visibly frustrated and upset after the game on Sunday – but his remarks seemed to shift responsibility onto the players and the board once again.
However, the truth is that Celtic’s lacklustre and possession for possession-sake style of play was to blame for their failures, and that responsibility ultimately falls on the manager and no-one else and no-one can do anything about it other than Brendan Rodgers himself, starting tonight.
