Following what has been a shaky start to the 2025/26 campaign, Manchester United finally have that big win of the new season. The Manchester Reds beat Chelsea last weekend, and Ruben Amorim would be looking for his side to pick up some momentum from those three points. And come this Saturday, they travel to the Gtech Community Stadium for a lunchtime kickoff, hoping to claim their third Premier League win in four.
While they are on the receiving end of the troubles after some major exits, including Thomas Frank and Bryan Mbeumo. The latter moved to M16, while the former chose to repeat Tottenham on the touchline. And they are hovering just above the relegation zone. Brentford will be looking to dig in at home and make life difficult for United.
They have had a bit of a stop-and-start campaign under new head coach Keith Andrews. The Bees have taken just four points from their first six games in the English top tier. And the loss to Fulham (3‑1) at Craven Cottage showed how this side are placed fragile on the defensive side of things. Given they have already conceded 10 goals in five league fixtures.
With this Brentford, there is more. We have seen this trend of them dropping points when leading. The Bees scored first in four league games, but they ended up winning only one of those. And that shows how the defensive mettle has gone far with Frank’s departure.
But the Bees have had a few good memories of facing United at home. They’ve won 2 of their last 3 home games against the Reds from Manchester. If we look at the last six games at Gtech against United, they have just lost one (winning three and drawing two).
The Manchester Reds have been under pressure given the poor start to the campaign. The pressure on Ruben Amorim had been rising rapidly, and you could sense that in the second half against Chelsea last weekend after Casemiro picked up his red. But that win against the West Londoners may buy Amorim some much-needed breathing space.
The duo of Gustavo Nunes and Paris Maghoma will be doubtful for the hosts, with both of them recovering from hamstring injuries. So if we are talking about their possible players in the middle of the park, Jordan Henderson would be leading the second phase alongside Manchester United target Yehor Yarmolyuk.
And then when it comes to the attacking side of things, Kevin Schade should be in line to start for the Bees again. He would likely form the front two partnering with Thiago, given the former’s strong performances vs. United last season.
It is also to be seen whether Andrews sticks to his preferred 3-5-2 this weekend or goes into a back four to stop a United attack that has the capacity to cause trouble if given space.
Casemiro will sit this one out. The Brazilian midfielder will serve his one-match suspension after he took the red against Chelsea last weekend. Lisandro Martinez continues his spell on the sidelines given his long-term knee injury. We have also seen Diogo Dalot miss out on the last couple of games or so with some muscle problems. It is still to be seen whether he finds some minutes or is still recovering on the sidelines.
That goalkeeping place is still under a massive debate. It is to be seen whether Amorim sticks with Altay Bayindir or finally gives Senne Lammens his opportunity to impress between the sticks.
And with no Casemiro, Ugarte should be in contention to come in for the visitors.
Kelleher; Van den Berg, Collins, Pinnock; Kayode, Henderson, Yarmoliuk, Lewis-Potter; Damsgaard; Schade, Thiago
Bayindir; Yoro, De Ligt, Shaw; Mazraoui, Ugarte, Fernandes, Dorgu; Mbeumo, Cunha; Sesko
Brentford as well as United are still finding their feet in the new season. But given the quality that Ruben Amorim & Co. has on paper, they should come through this game with all three points.
Brentford 1-3 Man United
