Tottenham Hotspur told to bolster their attacking line in the upcoming January transfer window

Gone are the days when Tottenham could rely on a striker to deliver twenty goals a season. The last man to achieve that feat for the Lilywhites was Harry Kane, before his departure to Bayern Munich in 2023. Two years on from the legendary forward’s exit, Spurs are still searching for a true replacement.

At present, Dominic Solanke and Richarlison are the options available for the No.9 role. However, it’s fair to say that neither has fully convinced since arriving at N17. If Tottenham truly aspire to compete for major honours, they cannot depend on either player to consistently lead the line.

Solanke’s ongoing fitness issues, coupled with Richarlison’s inconsistency, are a recipe for long-term trouble. Many fans believe that neither striker has the attributes to spearhead the attack under Thomas Frank for an entire season—particularly if Spurs are serious about closing the gap on their rivals.

Tottenham need to buy a new striker in January

The lack of a reliable centre-forward has become one of the most glaring issues in the squad. Supporters were left stunned in the summer when the club chose to strengthen other positions rather than go all-in for a new striker. Daniel Levy and his team clearly underestimated the importance of bolstering the attack, mistakenly believing Solanke and Richarlison would be enough to get by. That decision has backfired, leaving Frank to deal with the consequences.

Echoing this sentiment, former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Tottenham to act quickly in the transfer market. Speaking on talkSPORT, Agbonlahor said,

“I was thinking in the transfer window, Spurs should go and get a top centre-forward that can battle with Solanke for the starting place. Spurs need someone a striker who can score five in five or six in six. I think in January they need to bring in more attacking options.”

As Agbonlahor highlights, Spurs need a prolific forward who can not only keep Solanke under pressure but also provide a new attacking dynamic. A striker capable of going on a scoring run would be vital for Thomas Frank as he looks to build on last season’s Europa League success.

Recent reports have even suggested that Tottenham are exploring the possibility of re-signing Harry Kane. The England international has continued to excel in Germany, becoming the fastest player in Bayern Munich’s history to score 100 goals for the club. However, a reunion will not be possible until next summer at the earliest. Bayern are highly unlikely to part ways with their star striker midway through the season, especially as they push to compete on all fronts.

This leaves Spurs facing a crucial decision in the months ahead. Do they wait until the summer to pursue Kane, or do they move in January to secure a different option up front? Either way, the pressure is on Tottenham to finally address the striker problem that has loomed ever since Kane’s departure.
