Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo played together at Manchester United across two seasons and continue to play with each other in the Portugal national team.
Ronaldo’s second spell at Old Trafford saw him score 27 times in 54 appearances whilst also seeing him have five assists.
His spell at Al-Nassr has further underlined his scoring abilities with the 41-year-old scoring 122 times in 138 matches.
Fernandes has now commented on Ronaldo’s second spell at Old Trafford, outlining his feelings of having another fellow Portuguese international playing with him.
Speaking to Manchester United’s club media, the Red Devils captain stated he got “goosebumps” from Cristiano Ronaldo returning to play against Newcastle United
Commenting about what player he looks up to before moving into his experience of the return against Newcastle, the midfielder stated: ,”Cristiano is an easy one for me. He is Portuguese and everyone from 2000 – I was born in 1994 – from that age upwards, everyone was looking at him and seeing him.
“He won the Ballon d’Or with the club, which was something very special. All the fans here, when he came back, will never forget that day, when he comes back against Newcastle.
“It was an unforgettable day, he comes back, scores two goals and looks like he never left and everything.
“The atmosphere in the stadium was crazy that day, probably the best one I have experienced. Just the fact of Cristiano coming back, not the rest, but what was created around that, him getting into the pitch, the way he was presented, everything gives goosebumps still to me.”
Fernandes has experienced matches that live long in the memories of Manchester United supporters across the world, with the FA Cup quarter-final comeback victory against Liverpool in the 2024-25 campaign standing out amongst them.
For the fixture against Newcastle, and Ronaldo’s return, to standout amongst other memorable games can be said to show how much he looks up to the Portugal national team captain and may also show how much supporters of Manchester United care about Cristiano Ronaldo.
The prospect of Ronaldo returning to Old Trafford for a third spell at the club appears unlikely with retirement plans previously being outlined ahead of his final World Cup this summer.
