Manchester United have explored several midfield options during the summer as Michael Carrick looks to build a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts next season.
The Red Devils have been linked with some of Europe’s biggest names, but the transfer market has continued to throw up fresh twists with rivals making their own moves.
United’s other long-term targets are edging closer to different destinations.
One midfielder previously linked with Old Trafford now appears set for a major Premier League switch.
Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has agreed a five-year contract with Arsenal as the Gunners step up their pursuit of the Brazilian international, as L’Equipe reports.
The 28-year-old has informed Newcastle’s hierarchy and manager Eddie Howe that he wants to move to North London in order to continue playing Champions League football.
Arsenal have already submitted an opening bid worth £60 million, but Newcastle rejected the proposal.
However, the Magpies are understood to be willing to negotiate, with the club believed to value Bruno Guimaraes at around £77 million.
A fresh offer from Arsenal in the coming days could bring the two clubs closer to reaching an agreement.
Guimaraes has enhanced his reputation even further following an impressive FIFA World Cup campaign, where he registered 4 assists for Brazil.
Manchester United were also strongly linked with the midfielder earlier this year.
Back in March, reports suggested the Red Devils were in advanced talks to sign Guimaraes, although those claims were later dismissed by sources close to the situation, who insisted negotiations had never reached that stage.
Since then, United have focused their attention elsewhere, completing a deal for Andrey Santos from Chelsea while also moving closer to finalising Ederson’s arrival from Atalanta.
Although Guimaraes was once considered a potential option for Old Trafford, the Brazilian now looks increasingly likely to continue his Premier League career with Arsenal after agreeing personal terms on a long-term contract.
