Bryan Mbeumo has only worked under two managers since arriving in English football, and he has already spotted similarities between them. The summer signing from Brentford is still adjusting to life at Manchester United under Ruben Amorim, but he believes the approach of his new boss has echoes of Thomas Frank, who oversaw his entire development in West London.
Mbeumo moved from Troyes to Brentford in 2019 and played all six of his years in England under Frank, rising from Championship hopeful to one of the Premier League’s most consistent forwards. In 242 appearances for The Bees across all competitions, he scored 70 goals and bagged 51 assists. That grounding now serves him well at Old Trafford, where Amorim’s demands are high but the philosophy feels familiar.
The winger admits it has not been simple, describing the challenge of adapting to a different style and intensity, but he is relishing the opportunity. He says Amorim pushes the players hard in training, with high expectations for effort and focus, but keeps the sessions enjoyable. Mbeumo sees this balance as essential for a squad under pressure and believes it helps him improve every day.
Here’s what he had to say comparing Amorim to now-Tottenham boss Frank (via The Mirror):
“Really good. I’ve found some similarities between them.”
“He always tries to do training in a fun way and I think this is really important – to get some fun at football – because it makes life more enjoyable.”
That adjustment has been eased by a warm welcome from team-mates and staff. Moving to a club of United’s size could have been overwhelming, but Mbeumo has been quick to settle in Manchester, already scoring twice and showing flashes of his direct, attacking play. At 25, he is entering his peak years and looks determined to make himself a key figure in Amorim’s new-look side.
Hopefully, he gets a warm reception at the GTech Community Stadium, where he’d been a loyal servant over the years. As far as the Red Devils are concerned, Mbeumo represents more than a big-money signing. He brings a directness and unpredictability that the attack has lacked, a foil for the structured patterns Amorim is trying to instil albeit embryotic.
Facing Brentford for the first time since his departure will be an emotional moment, but Mbeumo is clearly looking forward. Comparing Amorim to Frank is no small compliment, and if the Portuguese coach can unlock the same upward trajectory, United may well have found another cornerstone for their rebuild.
