Manchester United are still in talks with Brentford over Bryan Mbeumo, but there’s now growing interest in another of his teammates.
It’s been over a month since United first opened discussions for the winger, and there doesn’t seem to be much movement toward a deal getting done soon.
Brentford have already turned down two offers, the latest of which came in at £62.5m. The Bees are holding firm at £65m, hoping to secure more than what United paid for Matheus Cunha earlier this summer.
Mbeumo is keen on making the move and expects it will happen eventually, but Ruben Amorim is eager to see it wrapped up as soon as possible.
The initial goal was to finalise things before pre-season started on July 7th. That deadline has now passed, and attention has shifted to having him signed in time for the upcoming US tour.
Meanwhile, reports have emerged that United are also looking into another player from Brentford internally.
Mbeumo remains the main focus this summer, but United are still aiming to bring in four more players once he’s secured, including a midfielder.
With money tight, the club are prioritising affordable options to add depth rather than making a high-profile signing. Ben Jacobs mentioned on The United Stand that Frank Onyeka from Brentford has come up in discussions.
“I know that they have discussed Frank Onyeka, who they think will be economical and a squad player.”
“However, with Norgaard leaving I am not sure this is a possibility. With Onyeka you have Valencia and Burnley who are also interested.
“United are [looking for] a squad player who won’t get people excited, but who will do the job and fit into this system.”
The 27-year-old wouldn’t be expected to start often if he joined United, but he could still provide valuable cover from the bench or in cup matches.
Onyeka is viewed in a similar light to Wilfred Ndidi – another player United might pursue later in the window if there isn’t enough money left for one of their primary targets. He was loaned to FC Augsburg last season.
Bringing in Onyeka would add depth, but it wouldn’t move the needle for United. There are already players at Old Trafford capable of filling that role without dipping into the transfer market.
Given the need to stretch every pound this summer, investing in Onyeka doesn’t seem like the best use of resources. The club has internal options who could step up, and fans have seen enough of these types of signings to know they rarely pay off.
With no European fixtures on the calendar, squad depth isn’t as critical this season. Instead, Amorim should focus on adding quality over quantity, making sure every signing can genuinely compete for a starting spot.
