Napoli confirmed that Alessandro Buongiorno will require a delicate surgical operation to repair the meniscus root in his right knee, so will be out for several months.
The defender had struggled with knee issues towards the end of last season and had hoped to resolve the matter with conservative treatment.
However, when he arrived for pre-season tests, it was decided he should undergo consultation with a specialist in Barcelona.
The verdict has come back and Napoli released a statement confirming that Buongiorno needs to go under the knife.
This surgery will repair the root of the medial meniscus in the right knee.
He is expected to undergo the procedure in Barcelona over the next few days.
It is not yet clear how long he will be out of action for, but it is a serious injury and a delicate operation for the 27-year-old Italy international.
Sky Sport Italia report that he is expected to be out for two to three months.
Napoli bought Buongiorno from Torino in the summer of 2024 at a cost of €36.5m plus add-ons.
