Fabio Capello has plenty to say about Juventus’s 4-3 victory over Inter in the Derby d’Italia on Saturday evening, pointing at potential goalkeeping errors, a ‘tired’ Lautaro Martinez and a ‘mixture of courage and recklessness’ from 19-year-old match-winner Vasilije Adzic.
Juventus were on the victorious side of a 4-3 in the Derby d’Italia against rivals Inter on Saturday evening.
Lloyd Kelly opened the scoring, but was cancelled out by Hakan Calhanoglu. Yildiz put the Old Lady back in front before half-time, only for Calhanoglu to strike again after the interval. Both Thuram brothers went on to score a header each for their respective sides, before the 91st-minute thunderbolt from the teenage Adzic to settle the tie.
Capello was impressed by Juventus, their defensive solidity and their ability to create chances without dominating possession for the majority of the game.
“Tudor managed the game very well, with a lot of tactical detail, and had chances to score without dominating the match. The old argument is back: Ball possession doesn’t count for much,” Capello wrote in his La Gazzetta dello Sport column.
“Chivu’s Inter is lacking a guy who can dribble. If not Dimarco, who can do it with speed and power?”
If there is one player worth talking about after the Derby d’Italia, it is 19-year-old Adzic, who found the winner in injury time with a moment of magic from 30 yards out.
“We must also focus on Adzic. If someone has the courage to come on and shoot like that, we have to wait and see what potential he really has. It was a mixture of courage and recklessness. If he’d have shot and hit the corner flag, we’d all be saying ‘why did he shoot from 30 yards? Pass the ball!’”
Capello felt that Inter had issues at both ends of the pitch.
“For the Nerazzurri, Lautaro looked tired to me,” he explained. “He gave everything he could after his transatlantic flight.
“The goalkeepers were poor, although you could see the anger that went into Calhanoglu’s shots.”
So, what have Juventus and Inter learned after the Derby d’Italia?
“Inter have partly found their team, but Chivu now finds himself starting basically from scratch after two defeats. Meanwhile, Juventus now understand that they can aim for the Scudetto.
“Inter have to recover their winning mentality, as early as Tuesday given the immediate challenge of the Champions League.”
