Brazil will face Bolivia in their upcoming World Cup qualifier without Casemiro.
They have already secured their spot at the finals, set to take place next summer across the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
Since Carlo Ancelotti took over as head coach in May, Brazil have shown improvement. The Italian brought back players like Antony and Casemiro, who had been left out by Fernando Diniz and Dorival Junior.
Antony moved permanently to Real Betis in the final week of the transfer window, leaving Casemiro as the only United player recently called up by the former Real Madrid manager.
The 33-year-old has one year remaining on his contract at Old Trafford and could head back to Brazil if he does not take up any potential offers from Saudi Arabia.
Ancelotti, who managed Casemiro during their time together at Real Madrid, knows well how tough it is to replace a player of his influence in the middle of the park.
Casemiro picked up a suspension after being booked in Brazil’s 3-0 victory over Chile. That yellow card was his third of the qualifiers, leading to a one-match ban.
This leaves Ancelotti without one of his most experienced midfielders. During his time at Real Madrid, the Italian found ways to manage without Casemiro and now faces a similar challenge with Brazil.
Ancelotti said replacing Casemiro is not just hard – it is not really possible.
“Looking for a midfielder with Casemiro’s characteristics is impossible,” the Italian coach admitted to journalists (via Trivela).
“There’s no other Brazilian player who has the same characteristics as Casemiro. But we have other players who can play in that position with different characteristics. It could be Andrey Santos, it could be Bruno.
“I also think that with different characteristics, because I’m not crazy, Paquetá can also play as a holding midfielder because he has the skill and technical characteristics to build play from the back.”
United did not make any additions to their midfield in the summer window, even after Christian Eriksen’s departure.
Casemiro, arguably past his prime, needs a younger replacement, but finding a suitable replacement is proving difficult.
Manuel Ugarte offers a different profile in midfield, and reports have also pointed to Brighton’s Carlos Baleba as another name being considered.
But one thing remains clear: Amorim is dealing with the same issue Ancelotti faces, as finding someone who can truly fill Casemiro’s role is not easy.
